Abstract
Vaccines are the cornerstone of public health. They stimulate and educate our immune system to recognize pathogens as foreign, destroy them and remember them. Vaccines have saved millions of lives in recent human history and helped eradicate or control devastating infectious diseases. Yet, throughout history, their contribution has been doubted. The history and outstanding significance of vaccines and immunizations will be discussed, focusing on myths and facts that surround them.
About the Speaker
Prof. George K. Christophides
Professor George K. Christophides is the President of The Cyprus Institute and Chair of Infectious Diseases and Immunity at Imperial College London. He received his PhD from the University of Athens and moved to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Germany, as a Marie Curie Fellow, where he later became Staff Scientist. He joined Imperial College in 2005 as Senior Lecturer and was promoted to Professor and Chair in 2011. Since 2013, he has been affiliated with the Cyprus Institute serving as Associate Dean, and was elected President and Provost of the Institute in 2020. His research focuses on infectious diseases, mostly those transmitted by vectors, such as malaria, Dengue fever, Zika and others, publishing a series of benchmark scientific papers that contributed to the advancement of these fields. He was amongst pioneers of the field of functional genomics and was centrally involved in sequencing the genomes of disease vector mosquitoes. He coordinated various international research projects in Europe, Africa, China and Brazil, and served as advisor to many international organisations such as WHO, EFSA, EC and others. He also served as Special Visiting Fellow of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil and Visiting Professor at the State University of Sao Paulo. He is a Wellcome Trust Investigator, receiving a major award to study malaria transmission. He is recently awarded funding by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to genetically engineer mosquitoes that are resistant to malaria and can help eradicate this devastating infectious disease.
