Course Purpose and Objectives

This course provides an overview of the science and engineering of renewable energy technologies, with the aim of understanding and applying the underlying physical principles of energy conversion, storage and transmission to sustainable energy systems. The students acquire skills to use bibliographic data, scientific and engineering techniques and tools to analyse the physical phenomena and evaluate performance of renewable energy technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Students will familiarize themselves with simulation and analysis tools, data visualization methods, literature and computational resources in order to engage in interdisciplinary activities, including interactive visualizations for the analysis and interpretation of the complex data of the performance of the built environment within its natural environment. The multi-disciplinary dimension of the course will enrich the scientific background of the students while offering them a better understanding of research and innovation thrusts of key vertical and horizontal priorities of the Cyprus Smart Specialization Strategy (i.e. Environment, Energy, Built Environment). Specifically, students will be able to:

  • Comprehend the main components of an interactive data visualization.
  • Represent the built environment that will stage the
  • Identify conflicting parameters and shortcomings in the visualization
  • Understand complex systems in built environment and their interaction mechanisms
  • Develop a computational visualization model (or a simplified prototype of it) and deal with the relevant technological interfaces and tools, and,
  • Be familiar and critical with the theoretical background, relevant practices, tools and methodologies of complexity theory and emergence in the context of the built environment research.

At the end of the course, students should:

  • have the knowledge of global energy budget
  • understand and be able to apply the physical principles underlying energy conversion, storage and transmission in sustainable energy systems
  • have the knowledge for the potential of deployment of renewable energy technologies
  • understand the role of renewable energy technologies in the carbon-neutral transition of the
  • global energy system and economy
  • have the skills to analyse and evaluate performance of renewable energy technologies using quantitative methods
  • have the knowledge base to advance scientific and technical skills to analyse the phenomena, evaluate the performance and design components and systems for renewable energy conversion, storage and transmission.
