European Sustainable Development Report 2025: The Sad State of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Cyprus Featured
The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Cyprus has analyzed the results for Cyprus in the European Sustainable Development Report (SDR) for 2025, published on January 29, 2025. Cyprus is ranked 32nd out of 34 countries in Europe, with an overall score of 62.7, slightly higher than the score of 61.0 in 2023/24, where Cyprus also held the same position. This ranking does not reflect positively on our country, and as SDSN Cyprus, we remain committed to continuing our efforts to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Our effort focuses on education, policy analysis, mobilizing all stakeholders, and fostering global cooperation.
The most problematic indicators, which contribute to a negative assessment of a total of 8 SDGs (i.e. those facing significant challenges), include: excessive nitrogen use in agriculture (SDG 2), representation of women in parliament (SDG 5), compensatory water imports (SDG 6), municipal waste recycling rate (SDG 11), plastic waste export (SDG 12) and CO2 emissions from fossil fuels (SDG 13).
It is noted that SDG 1 (Poverty) has been achieved and there has been progress on SDG 10 (Inequality). Additionally, it is important to note that efforts are being made by the Cyprus Government to improve the situation, such as the launch in 2021 of the Voluntary National Review on the Cyprus Goals. SDSN Cyprus applauds and encourages all efforts in this direction.
SDSN Cyprus will soon announce an event during which the findings of the aforementioned report will be presented and commented on. It will be followed by a discussion on ways to reverse this sad reality.
Since its establishment in 2019, SDSN Cyprus has worked with social and government partners to improve the country's implementation of the SDGs. The network promotes the dissemination of best practices, awareness-raising, education for sustainable development, youth engagement and the integration of the SDGs into their daily activities.
