Leonard Barrie is a leading international Earth System Science research scientist and manager, educated in Canada and Germany. Previously, he was Director of the Research Department at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva implementing international research programs related to weather, climate, water and the environment. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada where he served as senior research scientist in Environment Canada, adjunct Professor at York University (Toronto) and leader of major international environmental research initiatives. Also has served as Chief Atmospheric Scientist at Battelle Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, cross-appointed between the Atmospheric and Climate Change Research Group and the Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory of the US Department of Energy.
Barrie has been a member of many editorial boards of scientific journals, the Executive Committee of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, the Atmospheric Chemistry Commission of the International Association of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Vice-president of the International Commission for Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution and the International Ozone Commission. He is a member of both the European and American Geophysical Unions.
Currently he is on the scientific advisory board for four major European Union research projects and chairs two.
